Born in Christchurch, New Zealand, in 1970, Alex Bennett first came to Japan as an exchange student in 1987. He began practising kendo at a high school in Chiba, sparking a lifelong interest in Japanese martial arts and bushidō. He earned a doctorate from Kyoto University in 2001 and a second doctorate from the University of Canterbury in 2012.

After working at the International Research Center for Japanese Studies and Teikyo University’s Department of Japanese Culture, Alex joined Kansai University in 2009, where he is a professor teaching Japanese history and culture. In 2023, he was also appointed Director of the Budo and Sports Research Institute at the International Budo University.

Alex serves as Vice President of the International Naginata Federation and the Asia Oceania Kendo Federation, a member of the international committees of the All Japan Kendo Federation and the All Japan Jukendo Federation, and a board member of the Japanese Academy of Budo. Over many years, he has also served New Zealand kendo as a national team competitor, head coach, delegation leader, and board director. In 2001, he co-founded Kendo World with Hamish Robison and continues to serve as editor-in-chief of the world’s first English-language magazine dedicated to kendo and related martial arts. He holds the ranks of kendo kyōshi 7-dan, iaidō renshi 6-dan, naginata 5-dan, jūkendō kyōshi 7-dan, and tankendō kyōshi 7-dan. He also studies the classical martial arts of Tendō-ryū and Jikishinkage-ryū. Alex has competed internationally in both kendo and naginata, placing second at the fifth World Naginata Championships in 2011. He also founded the Seitokenyukai club in Christchurch in 1988. He lives in Kyoto and runs Jigokuden, the dōjō he established in Uji in 2026.

アレキサンダー・ベネット（アレック）。1970年、ニュージーランドのクライストチャーチ生まれ。1987年に交換留学生として初来日。千葉県の高校の部活動で剣道を始めたことをきっかけに、日本の武道や武士道に深い関心を抱くようになる。2001年に京都大学で博士号を取得し、2012年にはニュージーランドのカンタベリー大学で2つ目の博士号を取得。

国際日本文化研究センター助手、帝京大学日本文化学科講師等を経て、2009年より関西大学教授として日本の歴史や文化を教える。2023年には国際武道大学附属武道・スポーツ科学研究所長に就任。

日本武道学会理事、国際なぎなた連盟副会長、アジア・オセアニア剣道連盟副会長、全日本剣道連盟国際委員、全日本銃剣道連盟国際委員を務める。また、長年にわたり、ニュージーランド剣道連盟の理事やナショナルチームの選手・総監督・団長として活動してきた。2001年にヘイミッシュ・ロビソンとともに、剣道とその関連武道を専門に扱う世界初の英語雑誌『Kendo World』を創刊し、現在も編集長を務める。剣道教士7段、居合道錬士6段、なぎなた5段、銃剣道教士7段、短剣道教士7段。古武道では天道流や直心影流を学ぶ。剣道となぎなたの国際大会に出場し、2011年の第5回世界なぎなた選手権大会で準優勝。1988年にクライストチャーチでは青稲剣友会を設立した。京都在住。2026年に宇治市に道場「自極殿」を設立し、主宰している。
